Middle East and Africa Helium-3 – Overview
Helium-3 is a rare isotope with critical uses in nuclear fusion research, cryogenics, radiation detection, and medical imaging. In the Middle East and Africa (MEA), interest in Helium-3 is growing mainly due to rising investments in advanced energy technologies, border security, medical innovation, and scientific research. However, due to the extreme scarcity of Helium-3 globally, most countries in the region rely on imported supply or collaborative research programs.
1. Key Drivers in the Region
1. Growing Energy Technology Ambitions
Several MEA countries—especially those in the Gulf—are increasing investments in future energy solutions, including nuclear fusion research programs that may eventually require Helium-3.
2. Expansion of Nuclear Infrastructure
Countries such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and South Africa are developing nuclear energy capabilities.
